Last week was the season opener of the 2018 Karts & Kebabs racing league!
The first of only four rounds this season, there was definitely no lack of quality in the racing and action out on track.
With 16 drivers turning up to the first round at Picton Karting Track, it was a cold and windy qualifying session on Sunday afternoon. Luckily for everyone, there was a Karting Australia race meeting on all day so a lot of rubber was laid down prior to us getting out on track.
The 5 minute practice session and 10 minute qualifying session were combined and Vince took pole ahead of reigning team champions, Jarred and Jeffrey. Right behind the leading three was Raja, one of the rookies this season, and rounding out the Top 5 is last year’s Rookie of the Year, Mukessh. Below is how the rest of Qualifying turned out.
Just as everyone was preparing for the race, the skies opened up and drenched the track with rain. This, paired with another round of random kart allocations, the race was up for grabs by anyone.
As we rolled out of the pits for the formation lap, some of the drivers were already struggling to make it to their starting box because of the wet conditions.
When the lights went green it was one of the greatest opening races of any Karts & Kebabs season which Picton Karting Track has a record of doing. The 18 lap race tested every driver with the wet weather catching out a number of drivers throughout the field.
Reigning champion, Jarred was in front after the 18 laps and was easily quite clear of second place. Jarred also set the fastest lap of the race so was awarded maximum points for the first race of the season. Finishing in 2nd and 3rd respectively were Mukessh and Steven.
Behind the podium finishers was rookie Phillip, who also now leads the Rookie standings and pole sitter, Vince, who unfortunately, dropped 4 spots in the race after a spin.
This is how the race panned out for the rest of the field.
Thanks to everyone that came out to the first race of the 2018 Karts & Kebabs Racing League. We hope everyone had a blast and congratulations to the podium finishers at Picton Karting Track.
We’ll be heading to Eastern Creek Karts for the next race in September and we hope to see everyone there.
