That’s a wrap for 2017 and another successful year of racing! We ended the 2017 season with one of the best races in Karts & Kebabs history. We know we say it after each race but it does get better and better every time.
We had 16 of the drivers turn up at Picton for the final round and having all 16 out on track battling for the final race win was just phenomenal. It was great racing all throughout the field with on-track dramas all the way the way to the closing laps.
In the end Jeffrey and Jarred sealed their 2017 campaign with their first one-two finish of the season. Jarred has finally won his first Drivers’ Championship and Lotus Surprises won their first Team Championship. Jeffrey, last year’s winner, ended his second season in 3rd place and missed out on 2nd place by only a single point.
Right behind the duo was Mukessh (Mukeshhcumacher), who managed to reclaim 3rd place in the race and 2nd overall on the penultimate lap. Mukessh performed outstandingly all season and his Rookie of the Year win was definitely deserved. Mukessh’s team, Harold & Kumar, also finished the season 3rd in the Team Championship, a solid effort for a team with two rookie drivers.
Just edging out Harold & Kumar were Steven and Blandon of Yez Racing. They finished equal-4th and 6th respectively in the Drivers’ Championship and 2nd in the Team Championship. It’s the second time they’ve finished runner up in the Team Championship, maybe next year will be their year as they’ve yet to secure a Team Championship.
When it came to the weight classes, it was an even tighter battle for the winners of each class. Jarred took home another prize by taking out the Light Class and beating Mukessh by only 6 points. In the Medium Class it was a close battle between Jeffrey and Steven with Jeffrey coming out on top by a mere 3 points. And last but not least, the best performing Heavy Class contenders all season were Marty and Kieren, who ended up having equal points after the final race. Eventually, after multiple count-backs, Marty was crowned the winner of the Heavy Class.
Congratulations to all the winners this year and a massive thank you to everyone that has competed, not just this year but everyone throughout the 4 years that Karts & Kebabs has been running. This includes those who have been there since day one, those that only started this year and even the subs that have filled in for one or two races. In the end we are all just sharing our passion of racing and I can’t thank you enough for making Karts & Kebabs what it is today. It’s great to see such a diverse group of people come together, race hard and then enjoy some banter afterwards over a kebab (or fish and chips for others).
Hopefully we’ll see everyone back again next year for the 2018 season. We’re still in the process of planning it and as soon as information becomes available we’ll be sure to let everyone know. Until then, happy racing and see you all again next year!
PS. A massive shoutout to Steve Reed for coming down to Picton and providing photo and video coverage of the event.
